Peter,
The buzzing and the dim display make me think the power supply voltage is low
and you are hearing a relay chatter.

Put a voltmeter on the main DC line coming in and see what it does at power
up.
Also, do the same if the main line is OK, inside the radio on main power
busses.

There could be a leaky electrolytic capacitor somewhere, which "heals" after
warm up.

Another SOP is to unplug and reinsert ALL plugs and cable jumpers in the radio
as a way to clean any contact corrosion, or bad mating.
