I recall suggesting the Elecraft K-2 as a receiver between
the Scout and the OMNI VI in general quality. I have been
too busy to follow up, but here are some interesting numbers,
if you like receiver numbers:

It is interesting as the K2 does quite well even against the OMNI VI
in most categories. It certainly falls in the under $1k price
class, but is a kit. Quality control is in your hands :-) .
I plan to build one for portable operation. The OMNI VI stays home.
