I've been looking for a small QRP rig to take on business and camping trips
and have run across an Argosy model 525, (with the analog dial) that I'm
taking a look at tomorrow. The owner says he believes it works fine except
that the dial string elastic needs replacing which I gather from previous
posts is quite common and no big deal. Cosmetically he said that it looks
like someone once put some dabs of what appears to be finger nail polish on
the front panel a few places??? Don't have any idea what that means, maybe
it's paint scuffs from rubbing up against some other object. Anyway I have a
few questions:
1. As I understand it this rig can run either 5W or 50W output, switch
selectable. Does it also allow adjusting the RF power with a knob down from
there so that you could for instance run 1W or somewhere in the MW range?
I'd like to try it at very low power QRP sometimes.
2. Does $300 seem reasonable for this rig in this condition (what he is
asking)? I was thinking $250 sounded better, but am I being too cheap?
3. Does anyone have the specs to look up what the weight of this unit is?
Their old ad copy doesn't list a weight.
4. I am also considering the Wilderness Radio Sierra designed by Wayne
Burdick which is much smaller and lighter but lacks a lot of the features of
the Argosy. I'm fully aware of all the obvious differences, but does anyone
here have experience with both that could give me a subjective comparison of
their "ears", note quality, and QSK?
