Yup, end play in the PTO shaft leads to backlash and warble. There might
be a need to check the thread in the pistol. It may be worn but there's
supposed to be a spring to take care of wear for a long time. Time for a
rebuild to cure the backlash. Check the effect of pushing and pulling on
the knob, I think you will find the frequency changes more than the
warble.
