The creation of this effect is nothing new in the pro-audio world, but it is
nice to see the concepts applied to communications.

Back in the mid '70s, Orban/Parasound created the model 245 processor which
took a mono signal and comb-filtered the audio in
distinct bands and as I recall, placed two bands into the left audio channel
and three bands into the right channel.

Several broadcasters experimented with phase scrambling the left/right audio on
each channel, then inserting the result at reduced
amplitude into the respective cross channel.

For some time now, many hams have been inverting the phase of one headphone
driver in order to create an out-of-phase effect which
supposedly allows the ear to extract signals at low level that would otherwise
be unattainable.

Last year, AOR introduced a similar device to what will be offered in the
Orion. It does this trick, plus offers several other
functions.

I tend to prefer true binaural receive audio like that offered with the
RX-340/Pegasus/N4PY combination or the Yaesu FT-1000 series
transceivers. By controlling the frequency on one receiver in 1 Hz increments,
you can dramatically change the effect of the
perceived phase rotation. Slight changes of 1 Hz or so in either direction can
have a profound effect on extracting weak signals.
