Argonaut V - A/B comparison with the K2

My good friend brought his K2 over to my house this evening, and we sat
both rigs down side by side. Using an A/B switch to a Carolina Windom,
we played with the rigs for a couple of hours.

Bottom line (as the arrl like to say) the Argonaut V could not hear
anything the K2 could not hear, and vice versa. Signals that were only
about 50% copy on the K2, were only 50% copy on the 516.

Comparing the rigs on ssb was like comparing apples to oranges. The
Argonaut V beat the K2 on sound quality hands down. In all fairness to
Elecraft, my friends rig is optimized for cw, and using his filters on
sideband, did limit the sound quality.

On cw, the readability was the same. We went through all the filters
many times. I found the K2 to have a ringing sound, that the Argonaut
V did not have, and to me, listening to the Argonaut V was easier and
more relaxing, than listening to the K2. Again, in all fairness to
Elecraft, the K2 filtering can be adjusted and tweaked, and made to
sound just about any way the owner wishes.

There is no question, the Argonaut V has an excellent sounding
receiver, and the transmitter is pure fun.

My preference is listening to the Argonaut V with 20 db attenuation,
and the filter set at 200. It sounds so incredably clean!
