My just-acquired Model 544 manual has no mention of any of this, nor do I
understand how this 5-band radio can receive 10.000Mhz.

The manual does, however, reveal in a picture of the bottom of the radio a
trimmer (C16) that it labels "DISPLAY CALIBRATE". Sure enough, it
calibrates the freq display. It's accessible through a 3/8" hole in the
bottom cover near the edge.

Yes, if you will read the manual, you'll find that you switch to some band
and turn the preselector all the way one way. That lets you receive WWV at
10 MHz. Then you set the counter timebase so the readout ends in 000.0.
This is from dim memory but I'm sure it's in the book.
