Ronnie,

Most of us send CW much faster than we can copy it. Although it's a great
help to run QSO's, it's also very important to spend a lot of time just
copying (and trying to copy) CW which is being sent faster than your 100%
copy level. If you make any mistakes, nobody even knows (Hi) so you won't
have any guilty feeling towards the other station, etc. You'll soon find
you can copy "short bursts" much faster than you can copy long QSO text.
Bob's suggestion to just try to copy RST, QTH, and Name in your head is an
excellent one. Although I do not feel comfortable at speeds over 30 wpm
(anymore) for normal QSOs, I can easily copy contest exchanges at 40 to 45
wpm. The pencil slows you down. For the contest you need to receive the
[short burst] report in you head and afterwards write the short text down or
type it into a computer.

Put it this way, the practice receiving is like studying before a test, and
successfully completing a QSO is like passing the test. You spend a lot
more time studying than you do actually taking the test.

Good luck and hope to work you in the big CQ WW DX contest in November.

Hello again,
Well after getting the Omni VI+ figured out this past weekend, and finally
getting brave enough to get on cw once again, I find I need some cw help. I
can not blame it on the rig anymore hi. I need someone who is willing to
help me get my speed up and teach me how to contest. I am struggling along
at around 13 wpm and its killing me. I want to get my speed up to the 20 to
25 wpm range so I can do some contesting. My poor ole brain just aint quick
enough to figure out how to do it on my own. I would very much like to set
up a sked with someone who is willing to help a pure beginner. I have tried
several other options and none have worked. So im asking the best cw group
on the net for help. I will try my best to work around any sked that will
work for anyone brave enough to help me. I will follow instructions as best
that I can and practice as needed. Right now I have no idea of where to go
to just ragchew on cw and would like to meet someone on the air to just
practice. I have a great desire to be a good cw operator and somehow,
someway I will make it. Please help me if you can. I know this is crazy to
ask, but I thought I would try it anyway. Please email direct at
ke4vpn@carolina.rr.com if interested in helping me.
Thanks
Ronnie
