Frank:
This door also came from a hospital. It's made from oak boards inside. I'm
glad it didn't come from the Xray room however. That lead is rather heavy. I
had a bunch of steel file drawers here but this time I decided I wanted wide
open space under the desk so I could roll the chair around from end to end.

  Steve,
I use a WIDE door salvaged from a remodeling job at the local hospital. It
was 48" wide and I cut it to 38" to fit available space. For a base, I used
a pair of 2 drawer steel file cabinets from the local Wally World. This
provides space for books, papers etc. Total cost (on sale) was <$25.00 and
is strong enough to hold all equipment and also provide some work space.

Here's a link to the most recent pix of my table. Total cost was $0.00. The
main table is simply a 3ft X 8ft solid core door and the 2 shelves are the
same, sawed in half forming two 18" wide shelves. These doors came from a
commercial remodeling site and I saved them from the dumpster.
They had a hard coating of tan paint which I kept for the shelves but for
the table, I used my belt sander with a coarse grain paper to grind off the
paint. It left a rather rough surface to which I applied a heavy coat of
Minwax Gel Stain with no varnish. This is the first surface I've ever had
that my keys don't slide around! The edges are painted with flat black latex
  paint.
Rig lineup from left...Triton 544, IC-756ProII, Centurion Amp, Ameritron
  tuner.
Holding the whole thing up are some 1" boards on the ends, screwed to the
wall and painted to match the wall. I can jump on this table and it doesn't
  budge!

Can someone recommend an operating/computer desk that
might be available at a national store? I would like to have
2 levels of shelving for radios and room for a monitor and printer.

    Appreciate your suggestions!
