Actually, not a thing has changed.
The Orion is still out of reach for many, and the Icom and Yaesu prices are
just comical!

Wow. This is very, very interesting. Does anybody remember the uproar
surrounding the Orion's price when it was first announced? Thirty-three
hundred dollars, and everybody practically fainted. Just go back and
read the threads and feel the anxiety: How could they charge that much?
How can the little guy afford it? Does it really do that much more?
How things have changed. Whether you find a color display useful or not,
essential or not, the Icom 7800 has apparently succeeded in one thing:
raising the expectation of the radio amateur as to what he must pay for
a new transceiver. (Even if it does not simultaneously raise the bar
significantly on essential receiver specs.)
