Al,

I think what this says out loud is to always be your OWN judge when learning
to use a new radio. The Orion takes considerable study; it is quite a
different device from what we, as hams, have purchased, even five years ago.
It does take reading the manual several times and spending time until you
learn how to use it.

As far as the firmware downloads and updating problems, if you keep tabs on
these problems, most of the time it turns out to be unfamilarity with
computers. I can not recall any instance where it turned out to be either
the software itself, or the Orion itself.

As a happy member of the TEN TEC WORSHIPERS CLUB I am beginning to get
frustrated that I put out some 3500 bucks a year ago and my radio is not
finished yet. But having purchased Ten Tec equipment for a number of years,
even in frustration, I have confidence that I'm going to wind up with a
darned good radio...this one will just take longer.

Bill, what do I know-- after all, I've never seen an Orion-- but you
have put your finger on something that has baffled me... how come some
folks have all kinds of problems during an upgrade and a whole bunch
more folks have no problems at all? How is that possible?

Is it a function of the computer, as you say, not having anything to do
with the Orion?

How is it possible that one guy will say, "Hey, my sweep doesn't work,"
and thirteen others jump in and say, "We have no problem whatsoever with
the sweep"?

How is it possible that five guys will say, "Hey, my radio resets by
itself during a contest!" and three others tell him, "I just worked a
48-hour contest without any problems"?

How is it possible that eight hams have no QSK and six others have QSK
up to 50 words per minute? How is all of this possible?

I just don't know. It's all very baffling. Shouldn't this issue be
resolved before going on to anything else? Aren't you guys curious as to
the cause of all this? Or maybe you have figured it out while I was
daydreaming or something???
