Once there was a young man in medical school. He knew that his father
struggled every day to pay for the son's education. Fondly he would think
of his father's coming home from the plant each day and almost collapsing in
front of his record player to relax with his music. The young man vowed to
himself that just as soon as possible, he was going to buy the finest stereo
money could buy to replace his dad's record player.

That day arrived. The son took the father to the finest audio equipment
store and they shopped. They compared wow and flutter and total harmonic
distortion, listening first to one system and then to another to see which
sounded best to their ears. Finally they loaded the very best available
into the son's new car, took it to the father's house and set it all up
where the record player had been. The son was so very happy with himself
and the fine gift he had given his most deserving father.

The next time he was home he was disappointed that the father was not using
the fancy new system. He asked his mother what was wrong. She told him
that the father had lost interest in his music and no longer enjoyed it. No
longer did he listen to the music because now his ears were tuned for
defects -- pops, cracks, wow, flutter, total harmonic distortion, etc.
