One runs a VERY HIGH RISK of doing damage to the PTO tuning coil form by
simply trying to spray the threads of the PTO shaft. If some of the lubricant
drips onto the PTO coil form it could be absorbed by the coil form material. If
you have a problem with dried grease then the correct thing to do is remove the
PTO assembly and partially disassemble it in order to properly clean the main
acme screw and other related moving parts. All this hype about what to use to
clean the grease off the PTO parts is rather comical.
Just use common lighter fluid! Lighter fluid is one of the most useful
cleaning solvents you can buy. So far I have yet to find any plastic it will
damage.
Most of the time the actual brass tuning output shaft is badly worn in the V
groove where the 3 ball bearings make contact and it too should be replaced.
You also need to clean out the old grease in the end bearing cap and re-lube
it as well. I have rebuilt many of these PTO's over the years and I know first
hand what Im talking about.
Trying to cut corners is simply the wrong thing to do!
