Kip,

I sold my K-1 and kept my Argosy II-D. Never been sorry for it.

Subject: [TenTec] ARGOSY II as a 'new' QRP rig

I'm trying to decide between an Elecraft K-1 and an Argosy II 525D. (I think
I've got the model number right on that?) The Argosy has the #220 2.4 khz
crystal, the #217 500 hz crystal, the #224 audio cw filter and a noise
blanker installed. All that for $275.00, which seems like a fair price to
me.

I currently operate QRP cw only (with a filter-less Yaesu FT-7) and am
looking for a radio that will: 1.)Keep me happy on QRP ops, 2.) provide a
selective, sensitive receiver and 3.)stay with me as I gain skill. (I plan
to start chasing QRP DX.) My budget is very limited and I'm hoping to stick
with the radio I choose for longer than a couple of months.

I've had a fascination and respect for the Ten Tec rigs since being licensed
in 1980 - but have never owned one. Their sound on the air is always
distinct and a pleasure to work. Their owners are always devoted.

Does anyone here have experience with the Argosy and the Elecraft K1 so they
could make a comparison? I know we're talking a hundred bucks or more
difference, but what beyond that am I missing? Am I comparing apples to
oranges? Am I asking too much of a 20+ year old radio if I want it to stack
up against one designed in the past 4 years? Any comments or suggestions
would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks everybody and happy holidays.

Ouote:

"I guess you're mostly a phone operator, otherwise you would surely have
experienced arbitrary truncation of character elements with your TS570.
Mine went back to Kenwood for a firmware update to improve the situation
though alas not to cure it. It would certainly have been nice if I could
have downloaded that update from the web and nicer still if Kenwood cured
the problem altogether!"

Happy Christmas.

You're absolutely right, I'm a SSB op. I studied CW enough to get my 13 WPM for General, as it was a necessary evil then. Once I passsed the test, well, the key sits on my desk for decoration. I just never got bit by the CW
bug.
Why
work so hard when you can just hit the PTT button and say what you mean.
No
insult to CW ops intended. it's just not my cup o' tea. Happy Holidays to
you
as well.
