The 1.372 gain control certainly exposed agc threshold control more
conveniently, but I found myself wishing I had the truly *independent* rf/if
gain found in previous versions. When running the new-style rf gain control
up/down I'm never sure where agc threshold change is ending and rf gain
change is beginning. I guess I'm just a control freak. Also it seems that
from a signal overload standpoint, one might wish to reduce rf gain first,
before touching the agc threshold, but it seems that it's the other way
around in 1.372 - as the knob is turned ccw the agc threshold must change to
max before rf gain can be reduced. Perhaps there is a compelling benefit to
that arrangement that I don't realize yet, please enlighten me if so!
The rig is absolutely terrific and I've had wonderful weak signal results
using 1.371 and the approach outlined in that classic, "Using Orion's
Receiver", and honestly don't mind popping in and out of the RX menu once in
a while to adjust agc threshold. So inertia rules at the moment.
Anyway, maybe the thing to do would be to make the old style/new style
choice a user selection in the RX menu (or wherever).
I suggested as much to ditsnbits.

I agree that you should go through and set all the thresholds quite low and
then don't touch them again. However, I tend to adjust RF gain by
increasing it to just past where I can hear band noise. In other words, I
adjust it bottom-up rather than top-down. I tend to leave AF Gain constant
at about 50%, which seems to work well with my Heil headphones.
I tend to think that adjusting RF Gain to where background noise just starts
to drop would result in too much gain and the possiblity of audible
distortion as well as a general perception of a noisy receiver.
