Re Lightning strikes, here's some food for thought.
One day during a very violent storm here in the south of France, there was
an almighty crack not so far from the home qth, which
I assumed was lightning.
In fact the wind had blown the branches of a tree across the terminals of a
20kv overhead transformer shorting the EHT to deck.
Almost immediately there was a smell of burning in the shack and I
discovered the shack mains distribution socket was on fire as were
other sockets throughout the house. Somehow the 20kv had found a path via
earth into the house distribution and did it's nasty work.
Had we been somewhere else the consequences would have been disastrous.
EDF the national electricity company could not explain the reason excepting,
we had a very good earth!
