Paul,
        I knew you'd ask that - I'm not the expert on this, and had to
play a bit to rediscover it ... hold the VFO B  "Lck" button while
powering on and keep holding it for about 5 seconds -  you'll hear faint
clicking if you have good ears, and then release the button.  It will
indicate "Battery Failure."  Select the choice to erase user memory. 
(make the selection within about 30 seconds - if you wait too long, the
rig will time out, and you'll be left with 0.000 set for frequencies,
you'll have to redo the reset.  (At least, this is what I've found when I
was playing with it!)
