I am trying to get up to speed (pun intended) on CW operation. I'm tone deaf
and am just able to zero beat the CW spot tone to the recevied signal. I
have used a computer soundcard / waterfall program to zero beat, but I
really want to learn to do it by ear.

On my Omni VI (opt 3) I have found that the CW spot tone level is set by the
side tone level adjustment menu. I have noticed that the spot tone is lower
in volume than the side tone for the same setting. My problem is that if I
set the spot tone to a level that I can hear well enough for zero beating,
the side tone is louder than I would like. Is there some internal
adjustment that sets the relative volume levels of the side tone and spot
tone?

73,
Mark
