I have been messing around with tuners. I currently have a 238a and have
owned a couple 238 (old style) as well.
I think I am spoiled and really did not know it. The 238a has been a great
tuner and I have no complaints. I guess its a little bland looking, but
thats not really its job is it?
Anyway, I got an itch and bought a new Palstar 1500CV.
I use these on a Carolina Windom. The 238 is broad and easy to find a
match. The Palstar is a fair amount of work and although I can find a
perfect match, it only comes after lots of tweaking between the input and
output caps and roller inductor. You definitly need a cheat sheet with the
Palstar.
At first I could not understand why the Palstar had a turns
counter/reduction on the caps, but I know know its so sensitive you would
not be able to tune it otherwise.
So the question is...
What makes a good tuner? I have heard people talk about "Q" when it comes to
tuners.
I am sure the ability to easily tune and find a match is one thing, but does
that really mean that its a great tuner?
Right now, I from a tuning standpoint the Ten-Tec wins hands down ! But is
that all I should consider?
