No guesswork needed--the requirements are set by the shipper. If he/she requests signature confirmation upon delivery, items will not be left if no can sign for them. You'll get one of those handy "slips of paper" instead. The alternative is not requesting delivery confirmation & you'll come home to find your item left, soemtimes in plain view or suffering from inclement WX, et cetera.
