I still use my Omni V.9 every day. Yes, the keypad now does things it did not
do before.
For me the biggest improvement is being able to use the serial port. For
example I now get to enter data directly into my logging programme. But that
does require a fairly straightforward hardware mod that I have never
regretted making.

If I was to modify another Omni V (and the local club has one sitting there
doing nothing) I would also check if the NVRAM X204 memory chip is socketed.
It gets chronic amnesia after a lot of use. I cut the dead one out and fitted
a turned pin 8 pin DIL socket in my Omni. I also bought a few replacement
chips (from Newark.) The CMOS version is 24C04P and it works fine. In fact I
have not had to swap one despite many more years of use.
