Bob, welcome to HF! My first HF rig was a barebones one, a TT Scout. I
wanted to concentrate on the QSO, not fiddle with the radio 99% of the
time. I have graduated to an Omni V and Jupiter.

If you start out with a high-end radio and get discouraged, we would
hate to lose you! The Jupiter is an excellent rag chew rig with
outstanding receive audio.

If your son prefers a high-end radio and you will be sharing the
station, maybe you can compromise and upgrade later. The OM and I have
his-and-hers stations with separate rigs, antennas, amps, headsets,
paddles, etc. There's a lot to be said in favor of that arrangement.

One thing you will learn is that there's always another radio on the
horizon. TT rigs hold their trade value quite well and the company has
excellent service.

Another thing - don't think people on this list are too weird if they
start arguing about the TT logo dot color on their rigs. It's a running
joke, kind of like a slow news day and nothing else to talk about.

Don't skimp on antennas and use a headset or desk mike, not a hand
mike. Those are my other hints.
