As far as I can tell, its never been all that close.  My Orion I isn't here
at the moment, but ..

I just checked on the II, and it's a bit off, like it's always been.  Zero
beat in either USB or LSB and the other sideband is in the wrong spot and an
AM carrier isn't at the "0" position.  It's never been quite right.  I've
sent ditsnbits notes on the issue before, but nothing much has changed and I
finally just gave it up as a not significant issue.  It's arguably close
enough for government work, if you're building ships for the Coast Guard :)
