I think it was my option 3 I had a few years back, that I used an old interface cable from W1GEE for a 746 (uses the 1/8th" jack also). That left the db 25 on the back of the rig for the 301. Also, I have used a borrowed Y connector like Ken mentions here. Both ways worked fine and you do get to use rig control and a 301 at the same time. The baud rate for the computer interface was 1200 baud and I selected either an Icom 725 or 735 (lousy memory) in the setup of the logging program.

I have both a model 301 remote knob and computer serial communications
connected to the DB-25 connector on my Omni VI, and it works fine. I had
to make a 'Y' adapter with three 25 pin D connectors. If you need exact
pin to pin wiring instructions I can give you that information easily,
since I never got around to putting connector shells on it, I can see
where every wire goes. Just let me know and I'll email a wiring list to
the reflector.

OK Joe,

Thanks, I was afraid that may be the answer, but I didn't really want to lose the ability to use the 301 remote at the same time. Oh well you can't have it all.

I would guess that the problem may be with your Serial Port hookup to the 1/8" phone jack. I have never used the serial port (TTL level) connection but rather the DB-25. I use the cheapest Chinese USB-to-Serial converter and connect to my homemade DB-25 to DB-9 adapter configured as shown in chapter 5 of my OMNI VI+
manual. It works great.
