Ken, surely sounds like a thermal warm up problem.  Might check any 
connections/ solder joints near the display chips that get warm, or just 
resolder, (touch up) all those chip leads, and interconnections to the 
display itself.  Also, check any filter capacitor on the display logic 
board, or on the display board.
