My omni vi plus upgraded to option 3 has an excellent reciever...very comparable to my omni vii, and it can be interfaced with logging programs to ensure feq hopping during contesting. I would highly recommend the following...not including researching filtering... as I have on my Omni 6 for optimizing it for psk and other high current draw operation...

Pulling the internal speaker and installing a small fan in its stead to keep the rig on rock solid feq stability as well as keeping the internals running cool.
A second fan on the heat sink.

A TT 961 power supply or an Airpax 18 amp circut breaker in series with the rigs B+ power line.

Pulling the TT dc plug and installing something cabable of handling the Omni's current draw on xmit....I use Anderson Powerpoles...

Hi Lou,

Yes I have thoughts, but they are somewhat limited.

Myself I like TenTec, US products, and the ability to talk to a tech or have repairs done somewhere that I am comfortable.

I have a 5 year old Jupiter TenTec Model 538. I am not a CW operator. I've seen reports that it has a fair receive, and I wanted to get the best receive that TenTec has. So I was thinking of a higher priced unit. I've talked to some at hamfests and I have been told that the Omni 6+ has an excellent receiver.

Lou, in all fairness here is an URL where you can check this question out for yourself. Good luck! http://www.sherweng.com/table.html

Hello all,

I have finally saved up some money and I am looking to upgrade from my old triton IV... I am considering several right now: FT-950, TS-2000, 746Pro, Jupiter... I want to get the "best" radio I can for under 2K... I see TT is offering Omni IV factory upgraded to IV pluses for ~$1200... are these worth considering?? I have been licenced for about a year, and I am looking for something reasonably priced (<2K) that will not give me problems and I can use for at least 2 years with out wnting more. My current modes of interest are SSB, PSK31, and RTTY... I am still learning code, so that will be a future interest...

I also have the option to hold off a bit longer and up my limit to possibly get a new OMNI VII...

I guess I am just looking for some honest opinioins... Where I live hams with newer rigs are pretty sparce, and with no stores within reasonable driving distance I will be buying blindly... i.e. no desk time in front of ANY of the radios I am considering....

My key requirements are

1) PC interface for logging
2) Quality... I don't want to keep woking on the radio or having it repaired 3) Receive quality.... doen't have to have the best receiver, but don't wnat to get tired of listening to it. 4) Stand up to some contesting. I am not a hard core contester, but I have operating during a few contests and enjoyed it.

Any thoughts?

Lou
