my choice for good solid radio is the Orion (original unmodified). works
great and one has several choices of firmware to try.the main receiver
reminds me of the Collins 75s3b i had years ago: quiet and wonderfully good
even with s7 noise which is common in my location. no boxes necessary to run
digital/CW, just plug and play. oh, to be safe one does need an electronic
switch to key the Orion in CW mode. (made from one transistor, a diode and
two resistors). plug the Orion into a serial port, the switch into another
serial port (or USB/serial port) and go. (MixW works wonderfully for all the
digital modes i can imagine ever wanting to use.) the Orion comes with
cables for digital modes, just plug into the sound card on the computer.
most any generic sound card works fine.
i see nothing on the market for the price that beats the Orion. clearly if
one wants portability there are other choices.
