Well, part of the trick is to run at reduced power. 20-30W on SSB and
even less on CW is adequate for survival communications. I typically run
my Scout at 30W output and I can reliably work the New Jersey nets
with a good signal from my vacation spot in EPA. I used a 1/4 wave
end-fed wire, but now I use an 80 meter reel-out dipole for portable use.
