I bought a chinese headset for $2 and want to try it with my Orion I because the initial tests with sound card on Skype were very good. This headset has an electret mic and a conventional 3.5 mm jack for the sound card input. I am not a keen phone op but I became curious how will it work. Anybody tried such cheap headset to hook up to Orion (4 pin mic conn.)? How to wire it?

Hi Martin,
Computer head-sets/microphones are normally wired such:

Sound Blaster Microphone Input
or such:
**

/ \ | | Audio signal \ / +===+
       | | Bias voltage for microphone (+5V through 2.2 kohm resistor)
       |===|
       |   |
       |   |   Ground
| | +=======+

     |       |

**

and yes, I've hooked up a very cheap Labtec 203 head-set to my Orion 2, with excellent result (apart from the "plopping" and low audio volume, that is)

BTW: Thanks for CQRlog!!!! use it every day almost (for those not in the know: CQRlog is an excellent general purpose log program for Linux, written and maintained by OK1CQR and OK1RR)

Sorry forgot about the poor graphics capabilities of the reflector, you can see it much better here:
