Hi John,

No, you do not necessarily need to buy an adjunct interface in order to
operate HF digital modes with the ORION II, if you don't mind doing a little
bit of work. I operate both PSK31 and FSK RTTY with no adjunct or 3rd party
interface unit. I utilize the ORION AUX I/O jack, 8 pin DIN receptacle on
the back of the OII, my computer sound card, and serial port. The AUX I/O
port provides easy access to the audio input and output required to
interface a computer sound card as well as push-to-talk, and several other
functions. To free up my serial port I use a USB port for radio control
thereby never have to get up and switch cables when operating different
modes while still maintaining radio control with my software.

You would have received with your radio (when ordered new) an accessory DIN
cable that connects to the AUX I/O port on the back of the radio. The other
end of this cable consists of color coded wires terminated with an RCA
connector (female). For FSK RTTY operation I use a simple mod of this
cable, made by bringing out one additional wire from the back of the AUX I/O
DIN plug (pin #7) FSK. It is not difficult to integrate this wire into the
existing cable provided by TEN TEC and is only required if you desire to run
FSK verses AFSK (for RTTY). Several years back a modified cable was being
built and sold by K5SF, Richard Detweiler, for those who did not want or
feel capable of adding the auxiliary wire for RTTY FSK operation themselves.
It really is a very simple task to add this wire for FSK operation. Or, you
could elect to use AFSK which would not require this connection/wire from
the ORION AUX I/O port. My personal preference was to operate with FSK.
You might drop Rich a note and ask him if he has any left over that he
didn't sell, he might part with one, or perhaps another member of the
reflector has one which they no longer require.

If you decide to go this route and don't mind a little bit of work feel free
to send me a note and I'll provide you (off net) with a more detailed
description of the configuration I am using.

Page 27/28 of the OII Operating Manual, provides additional detail and
description for the AUX I/O port.

Good Luck
Steve - W5JK
