Jerry,
For $800, you have several options. If you are into SWL stuff, you'll
probably want a rig with general coverage receive ability (Pegasus and
Paragon I come to mind). If you are not interested in SWL stuff, I would go
for an OMNI V with the V.9 N4PY chip. If you wait long enough, you may be
able to find a deal in that range for an OMNI VI. With and OMNI V you could
probably get something for around $600 with an extra filter or two. You
could use the extra money left over to buy a power supply and an automatic
antenna tuner. The OMNI V or OMNI VI will give you a fine rig for chasing DX
and contesting.

Well a Pegasus is pretty much the same animal, for less than your budget.
I'm not sure you'd find a Jupiter for your budget. At least to me it's not
worth $500 or so for the buttons, but that's me.

As a former Pegasus owner I second the motion.
In some ways a more enjoyable rig than my Omni VI, but not in all.

The best bang for the buck is to find a used Pegasus for $500.
