Chas,

Changing the "ANN" function under hidden menu #1 from "ALL" to "OFF" did 
the trick. This is the annunciation beep function that causes the unit 
to emit a short beep when any of the front-panel keypad buttons are 
depressed. Thankfully this appears to be totally independent of the CW 
sidetone volume setting. I had a long QSO on SSB Sunday afternoon after 
making the change and I had no problems with the intermittent beeping in 
my headphones while I was transmitting.
