I've never owned one, but my Hercules II runs quite well from any good
solid power supply that puts out 14V at 80-90A. My first solution was a
pair of Astron RS70s, each dedicated to half of the outputs. The power
plug is wired so that is quite easy to do. The RS70s have a voltage
sense terminal that allows them to be strapped together, and I use it.
My second solution is a big switching power supply that a friend gave
me after I loaned him the Herc II to take on a DXpedition. It's a LOT
smaller and a LOT less weight, but with enough output to run the amp at
full power. He used it on the DXpedition, and gave it to me when he
returned the amp.
A third solution I've seen folks use is to run the amp from a big 12V
battery that is float-charged by a well regulated supply big enough to
keep the battery charged with the TX duty cycle. I've done this with my
transceivers for years. AA7JV, who, with HA7RY runs VERY good 2-man
DXpeditions to remote islands, used six 12V car batteries and float
charger to run his 500W amp for nearly a month. Because the power
supply was relatively small, they were able to run their small 1.5kW
Honda generator in economy mode, and got by with a ridiculously small
amount of gas. That was critical, because they were on a very small
