Art, I would not think a tube would have a smell if it arced, unless it was an external arc at the pins. My bet would be a capacitor having shorted, such as the one from the final active devices to the band tune network. Or it could have been a capacitor elsewhere. Of course, if a strong burned smell, look for arced insulation or a burned resistor. A magnifier and strong task light can be helpful in crowded circuits.
