Oh... I was afraid of that.

Is there a line-in input on the Omni VI ?     If so, maybe he could use 
a simple mic preamp to boost the mic signal to line-level, and then let 
the rig do its normal adjustment as it would with a mic with higher 
output.   He might be able to route the mic to the 715 processor, and 
then through the preamp to the line-in input on the rig.  The preamp 
would boost the signal strength to a workable level on the rig.

Alternatively, I have seen very small, low power mic preamp circuits for 
boosting a weak mic input to mic input levels  (not up to line-level ) 
and maybe that would give him the wider dynamic latitude he is looking for.
