You can't be much older than me, mike.
Which autotuner do you use?

Like I said, I'm with you. I just can't afford the solution I need.
There are a couple of companies over here with great solutions, ranging from
about $2K to $4K.
Not only out of my price range.... out of what I would be willing to pay
even if I had the spare change.

Cheers
Rick

Rick,

Your idea will work, but I have an auto tuner at the antenna and using less
than 300
watts, it works great.  Don't have any "hot" mikes or strange things going
on with
the computer, or other weird things.

I guess I'm to old to change. HI HI.

Clayton,

Well you had an easy challenge:  make it work on one frequency.

I whole-heartedly agree with you in theory but it's not always practical.

In today's world, we are trying to cover up to 9 bands with one antenna.
There are some good remote tuners to do what you want to do, but most are
for low power and even then they cost a lot more than the tuners in the
shack.  I think MFJ recently came out with one that can handle high power,
but I haven't seen it yet and don't know how much it costs.

As long as we can keep the SWR down to about 3:1 on all bands, and use a
good quality, short run of coax between the antenna and the rig, I don't
think the built-in tuner is as bad of an idea as you portray it.  You lose
about 10% of your power in exchange for a good match presented to the rig.

If I lived on a farm without neighbors, I would have nothing but monoband
antennas, all with a perfect match at the antenna.  Gotta win the lottery
first before I can realize that.

In going back to the broadcast days, we always put the tuner AT the antenna
and
had a "flat" line for the antenna to the transmitter.  Works better than a
line full
of VSWR in the shack.

In my view, internal tuners are to be avoided.  No exceptions.

Based on my experience with the built-in auto tuner on my Omni VII it
will not usually outdo the external tuners, but I don't know what MFJ
tuner you have... but most will be more robust than the TT tuner.

That's MY take...
