My vacation rig for cabin camping is a TT Scout. The Scout, mic, key,
band modules, power cable and Ten Tec power supply (the TPS P-11) all
fit in an attache style tool chest purchased for $20 from Home Depot. A
reel-out dipole (made from AN/CRT-3 life raft transmitter antenna reels)
and coax go in a separate duffel bag.
I have a couple of mods that improve the utility of the Scout:
Replaced one 15 pf N1500 capacitor in the PTO with 15 pf NP0.
Set the output power to 30 W to reduce current drain when running on
battery. This also reduces heat from the final, which improves PTO
Added a mini toggle switch on the rear, in place of the ground lug. The
switch increases AGC voltage, reducing the receiver IF gain. This makes
reception on 80 and 40 meters much less fatiguing.
I would like to get a Rock Mite for my go bag. What band do you
recommend? I'm thinking of either 40 or 30 m.
