Hot Backup.
One dies, switch to the other and keep on truckin'...
James, for contests it is very important that you standardize.
That makes switching rigs a no brainer.
Outside of contesting, I think most people would rather have a different
kind of transceiver as their second transceiver.

Good Operator Department:
How would one use multiple rigs of the same model? I can see why one
might wanna try a different rig for some reason or other, but why have
multiple copies of the same model? How do you operate using multiple
radios (other than SO2R contesting) ?
This is a serious question about HOW TO USE our radios - the sort of thing
you don't get from the instruction manual - and can only get get from a
discussion with a more experienced ham, maybe over a tall cold one.
Thanks.
