I concur. A WinKeyer kit and an hour or two of soldering / building can make for reliable CW keying when using N1MM or other logging programs.

I've had the same issues, either using the serial or LPT port. Just too much stuff going on for my old computer I guess. The main benefit that interests me about using winkey with N1MM is being able to know that my keyer is always set to the same speed as N1MM without having to adjust them individually.

  I've used CW via the serial port a lot, but it can get "choppy" if the
computer has too much other stuff (or "certain" other stuff) running in
the background. That's the problem that WinKey solves reliably.  It has
nothing to do with the radio, it's a computer setup issue.

I've had a similar problem with a computer that I use to run a Vector
Network Analzyer, so I've chased down some of those problematic things.
Two I recall are Skype and Windoze Messenger.
