The KWM-2/PM-2 combination that I have in my shack cost $1300 when Collins introduced it in 1959. They sold thousands of them. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, that price is equivalent in purchasing power to about $10,500 today -- more than the Orion II but less than the "flagship" riceboxes. Would that be a reasonable price range for an Orion III? Depends on how it stacks up against the competition. Considering its performance, the roughly $5K price of my fully loaded Orion II seems like a bargain. 73 Ray W2RS |
