For those faced with replacing filter capacitors that are leaded. If you are concerned you are going to lift traces, simply cut off the leads of the old caps, leaving enough of a stub of wire on the pads that you can coil it around the lead of the new cap and neatly solder it. Done with care, it does not look bad at all, and provides a robust connection if you can solder correctly. Also can be done on antiques that have tag strips that have such old low tin solder, that they don't unsolder easily; or the tags are too big and full of solder to allow complete clean out with a solder sucker without damaging the phenolic insulation. -Stuart Rohre K5KVH |
