It is true you can often substitute a 4 or 8 ohm speaker, if the driving
amplifier has enough power to drive 4 ohms. You can make a test with a
resistor to see if the amplifier can deliver the current with no
overheating of the Amp. chip.
If you only can find a 4 ohm, and you think or can prove the old one was
8, you can use a power resistor in series to sink the excess current.
I have, in a pinch substituted a smaller speaker, mounted by one bolt,
to get something working, with a note that correct speakers were on back
order from Ten Tec.
Or, sub an external computer speaker box plugged to the headphone jack,
again with a note on the rig.
Check the surplus houses like Electronic Goldmine, and all the regular
large distributors. Surely there is the right size one out there somewhere!
