Yikes! No "MULTI" control would be a definite PITA. 

Given the symptoms, the connector interface integrity sure makes a whole lot 
more sense than a problem with the encoder itself. I'm off to find some 
CircuitWorks conductive silver grease.

My thoughts/opinions:

TT changed the encoder because the original encoder manufacturer stopped
making it.

I believe your intermittent encoder operation is due to bad contact
conductivity in the encoder cable connector.  I think the best solution is
a light application of conductive silver grease to the connector contacts,
as described under the RIT encoder fix at
