Same problem here last year, first noticed in main rcvr but not the sub. I did 
all the same things that you describe, several times actually, none of which 
had any effect on the problem.  At first there was the sudden shift, then it 
was more of a warbling like an oscillator going unstable. Finally sent it off 
to TT but they said it couldn't be fixed. They finally deemed it was the victim 
of lightning damage, but I have my doubts about that. But I have now placed it 
in the junk pile and thanks to the lightning letter they wrote me I am shopping 
for a new radio.
