The Orion / Orion II have a flash memory device that stores the program
that runs the radio.
The case is much different for a small microcontroller, like the one
doing the display for the Corsairs. It has its program memory built
in. Some devices give you the ability to program that memory; other
devices have that memory programmed as part of the the mask for the part.
The reliability of processors and flash memory devices is very good, so
the likelihood of a failure is very small. It usually takes something
like a lightning strike to destroy a processor or flash device. And it
usually takes out many things, which is why a lightning strike usually
means that the radio is probably not repairable.
