That was already mid-range.

When I was a boy, entry level was a Heathkit AR-3 or Hallicrafters S-38
receiver and a DX-20 or DX-35.

Well, isn't there a mid-grade radio between "entry level" and "contest
grade"?  I consider entry level to be the Alinco or the ICOM IC-718, both
under $1000.  For $1500, I wouldn't expect a super contest radio, but I
would expect something better than entry level.  (Ah, when I was a boy,
entry level was a used Hammarlund receiver and a Heathkit DX-60A).
