GM Steve, and all others of course.

I am currently on a short holiday for a few days, hiking in the mountains
near Munich with two YLs and a doggy - no radio. It will be several days
until I can check this.

Gotta take advantage of the nice WX. It won't be long until winter again
and our only option will be radios!

This is a very curious but fun problem.
It's fun because even though I haven't found the problem, I can still use
the radio, at least on receive.
I haven't tried the TX yet, other than to key it into a dummy.

I'm checking emails mornings and nights, so don't you guys go talking about
me behind my back.
BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING. (hi)

Rick,

That was the only option I could come up with that met the observed
symptoms!

However, I dismissed it because I didn't think enough of the 5MHz-5.5MHz PTO
signal would make it through the MC1496 PTO/XTAL balanced mixer to provide a
viable local oscillator. On 20m - when they use the PTO signal directly for
the Local Oscillator - they switch it directly to the LO buffer, completely
bypassing the MC1496.

It'll be interesting to hear if the rig does tune "the wrong way" - that
would be further evidence that the LO is wrong. A quick check if you hear CW
signals at the 'phone end of 80m and vice-versa might confirm it.
