A couple of points off the top of my head if I'm remembering correctly:
1) I think a main expense for ladder filter production would be the
requirement for crystal matching: the more closely the resonant frequencies
are matched, the closer the filter comes to its theoretical performance. That
being said, the matching process might be something which could be automated.
2) Ladder filters handle transients better than lattice filters, thus the
cleaner sound.
(Both of these items are covered in ARRL publications like SSDRA/EMRFD and
have been discussed in the past on this reflector.)
