 Katz,

WRT your closing comments:

Having once owned a TS480SAT (2nd prize at a hamfest), I can tell you that it
is a very nice radio. For mobile use.

And were I to get another one, one way or another, I do have some uses for it.
For mobile use, or for some remote projects a few of us are kicking around
locally.

But I wouldn't put one in the shack again. Not for general use, and definitely
not for contest use.

WQ3T literally lives around the corner from me, not even a 1/4 mile (I walk
past his house when I'm walking the dog!). If he and I were both on 40 CW at
the same time, I always knew it with the 480 -- and I could never get within 15
or 20 kHz of his frequency. (And I had the optional 500 kHz filter installed)

With my Corsair II, and later my Omni VI+, and now my Omni VII? Not a key
click, not a bit of front end overload, nothing -- unless I'm within about 1 or
2 kHz of him.

YMMV, of course.

Not at HRO but have seen used:
eagles in $600 to $1500 range with most around $1000 to $1200;
ic7300 $900 to $1300.

If I were buying a new radio today, what would I get?
I've used both the IC7300 and the Kenwood TS590SG. The Kenwood wins based
on pleasant CW and ease of use. The built in feed line tuner is not so hot.
The IC7300 touch screen is a PITA to use, the pass band tuning will not let
me put the very low CW note that I like for weak signal by ear in the
passband.

I recently decided to quit messing around with putting an old Heath single
bander on CW for mobile, and traded for.....
a used Eagle. Now have two of them.

I looked at the TS480SAT as it's about the same $ as a used Eagle when CW
filter and tuner are considered. It's probably a better fit for mobile.
However, when considering ease of use in the pickup truck...I am already
familiar with the Eagle.
