Sorry for the sort of contradiction.

These ARE easy to repair so long as it’s one of the three things I mentioned. 
However, the regulator PC board is far more complex than it needs to be and, 
especially with aging decoupling capacitors etc. pretty difficult to diagnose 
on a first principles basis. Replacing all of the caps might have fixed mine, 
but the surge that took out the semiconductors pretty well ended that project. 
It’s no longer worth the effort or expense.

I may just put in an LM230 adjustable regulator, feeding the pass elements, 
with an OVP and modernize this supply…
